SUMMARY:Next STEPS in Literacy Instruction: Book Study
DESCRIPTION:After a universal screening assessment\, how can K-6 educators translate the results into evidence-based instruction\, targeted interventions\, and improved reading outcomes? \nJoin Nellie Caruso in these bi-weekly sessions to dig deeper into Susan Smartt and Deborah Glaser’s Next STEPS in Literacy Instruction: Connecting Assessment to Effective Interventions. \nTogether\, we will explore each chapter\, building around the big five ideas of phoneme awareness\, phonics\, fluency\, reading comprehension\, and vocabulary. After a brief introduction to each concept\, we will explore assessment options\, and strategies for connecting assessment findings to lesson planning. We will discuss tactics\, scenarios and planning with educators from across the province\, learn how to take action after assessments\, and make data-driven decisions to support reading growth for all of our students. \nCome prepared to collaborate with other educators in these interactive\, discussion-based meetings and to share your insights on the chapter and discuss classroom applications. The ebook version of Next STEPS is available in the Ontario College of Teachers Member’s Library or for purchase through Caversham Booksellers or Brookes Publishing. (Please note we are not affiliated with any publishing companies.) \nThese sessions will not be recorded. Be there to ensure you don’t miss out! \nTuesdays\, 7:00 – 8:00 pm\, every other week\, starting January 9\, 2024 and ending April 16\, 2024. \n\n\n\nDate\nChapter\n\n\nJanuary 9\nChapter 1: Introduction to Next STEPS\n\n\nJanuary 23\nChapter 2: Using Next STEPS to Teach Struggling Readers\n\n\nFebruary 6\nChapter 3: Phoneme Awareness\n\n\nFebruary 20\nChapter 4: Phonics – Decoding\, Encoding\, and Word Recognition\n\n\nMarch 5\nChapter 5: Fluency\n\n\nMarch 19\nChapter 6: Reading Comprehension\n\n\nApril 2\nChapter 7: Vocabulary\n\n\nApril 16\nChapter 8: Weaving Elements Together for a Lifetime of Reading\n\n\n\nRegistration in one event will automatically register you for all events.
